On March 25, 2025, the final transnational meeting of the IDEAL project – Increasing DEaf Adult health Literacy through innovative methodologies – took place in Budapest. This meeting, organized by the Hungarian organization SignCoders in cooperation with SINOSZ, was a key milestone before the official conclusion of the project, which is scheduled for 30 April 2025.

The meeting marked the culmination of two years of collaborative effort by partners from various European countries involved in the project. The goal of the IDEAL project has been to improve health literacy among deaf adults and to provide them with access to essential health and prevention-related information.

Handbook for Adult Educators

One of the main highlights of the agenda was the presentation of the outcomes related to the handbook for adult educators, coordinated by the Italian organization TUCEP. Participants discussed the final version of the handbook, which is intended for training educators, as well as its translations into various languages. The handbook is based on results obtained through field research, which helped identify the main challenges faced by the project’s target group. At the end of the meeting, the partners agreed that the handbook would be a valuable tool in the further education process.

Improving Health Literacy of Deaf Adults

Organizations IRR from the Czech Republic and CNSE from Spain focused on improving health literacy among deaf adults. The discussion covered identified gaps in health education, the creation of educational materials, and pilot testing of teaching methodologies. In addition, the partners worked on the preparation of awareness-raising videos aimed at increasing knowledge about health-related topics among deaf adults.

Development of the Digital Platform

The Hungarian organization SignCoders presented progress in the development of a digital platform, which will serve as one of the project’s main outputs. The platform will provide educational materials, videos, and other resources related to health and prevention, accessible to a wide audience. Discussions included technical aspects of the platform, completion timelines, and challenges in implementation.

Dissemination and Final Evaluation

The organization INNOSIGN focused on evaluating the current state of project result dissemination. The partners reviewed plans for multiplier events, analyzed target audiences, and discussed the final steps needed before the project’s official conclusion.

Two Years of Collaboration

The IDEAL project brings together organizations from Slovakia, Italy, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Spain in a joint effort to enhance access to health and healthcare information for deaf adults. Thanks to this collaboration, valuable outputs were created, such as methodological materials, digital tools, and awareness-raising videos, all of which contribute to improving health literacy in this community.

All project partners agreed that the two years of hard work led to significant progress. We thank all partners for their dedication, expert contributions, and ongoing efforts. These results lay a strong foundation for further development in the area of health literacy for deaf adults.

The IDEAL project is nearing its conclusion, but its results will continue to serve as a valuable resource for the deaf adult community.

On 11–12 September 2024, the 3rd transnational project meeting of the IDEAL project took place at Středisko Teiresiás in Brno, Czech Republic. The project focuses on improving health literacy among Deaf adults. The meeting was hosted by TEIRESIAS and attended by partners from INNOSIGN, TUCEP, AUSRU, IRR, CNSE, and SIGNCODERS.

The main topics of the meeting included:

• Developing a handbook for educators to support professionals working with Deaf adults.
• Mapping knowledge and skills in the area of health literacy.
• Raising awareness through digital platforms to improve access to essential information.
  

During the meeting, discussions focused on the results of field research, ongoing educator training, and planned activities for the upcoming period. This milestone represents an important step toward achieving the goals of the IDEAL project, which aims to strengthen health literacy within the Deaf adult community.

Presentation of the IDEAL Project at the LangSkills 2 Conference

On 12 September 2024, the IDEAL project was presented at the LangSkills 2 Conference in Brno. The presentation, delivered in the form of a poster, attracted significant interest from conference participants, who inquired about various aspects of the project.

The discussions centered around topics related to health literacy and education for Deaf adults, contributing to greater awareness of the IDEAL project among professionals and stakeholders.

Through this event, the IDEAL project once again highlighted its crucial role in promoting health literacy and inclusion within the Deaf community.

From 14 to 16 May, a training session for educators took place in the Czech city of Brno, attended by 15 participants from five different countries – Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Spain, and Italy. One of the goals of this event was to receive feedback from participants regarding the handbook for educators.

The first day of the training, Tuesday, 14 May, was dedicated to the arrival of all participants. In the afternoon, an introductory meeting was held where participants introduced themselves, familiarized themselves with the project, and reviewed the schedule for the following days. The evening was reserved for a cultural program with the group in the city of Brno.

The second day, Wednesday, 15 May, was the main and most challenging day of the training. The morning was devoted to intensive educational activities and workshops. Throughout the day, we engaged in discussions about potential changes and improvements to the handbook for educators. Thanks to our partners, we received valuable feedback and new perspectives on various topics. This day highlighted the importance of collaboration and teamwork in achieving common goals. After a lunch break, there was a tour of the Teiresiás Center, and the training continued until 16:30. Despite the demanding schedule, we found time for a joint tour of Brno, admiring the beauty of this historic city. The day concluded with a great atmosphere during a group barbecue in a friendly setting.

The final day, Thursday, 16 May, focused on wrapping up the training and gathering feedback. During the morning, a discussion took place in which participants shared their opinions on the handbook for educators. The discussion revealed that the handbook is generally well-prepared and provides valuable information. Participants appreciated its clarity and practical applicability, though several suggestions for minor improvements were made to further enhance its quality and usefulness. These suggestions mainly concerned the addition of some specific information and examples.

The insights and suggestions obtained will be carefully considered and possibly incorporated into future updates of the handbook to continuously improve this valuable resource for educators.

The training for educators in Brno not only provided an opportunity to gain new knowledge and contacts but also valuable information for further enhancing the handbook for educators. We believe that, thanks to the feedback from participants from five countries, this handbook will continue to serve as a useful and inspiring resource for improving education.

The IDEAL project, which stands for “Increasing the Health Literacy of Deaf Adults through Innovative Methodologies”, organized its second Transnational Project Meeting (TPM2) on 10-11 January, 2024 in Perugia, Italy. The meeting was hosted by the organization TUCEP – TIBER UMBRIA COMETT EDUCATION PROGRAMME.

The main goals of the 2-day meeting were to discuss the progress and next steps of the IDEAL project’s Work Packages 2, 3, and 4.

Work Package 2 focuses on creating a Handbook for adult educators who work with deaf adults. Partners shared updates on their interviews and research about best practices in each country. They also talked about the plan for what will be in the Handbook, as well as plans for upcoming training for educators.

For Work Package 3, which involves creating learning experiences to improve the health literacy of deaf adults, partners received guidance and instructions on mapping the gaps in health knowledge and skills in the target group. This mapping will help shape the educational materials.

Lastly, Work Package 4 covers the development of an online platform for the project. The structure of the platform and next steps in building it were presented and discussed.

The meeting ended with a social dinner, which allowed partners to further discuss insights and strengthen their collaboration. Overall, TPM2 enabled partners to align on key tasks to move the IDEAL project forward in achieving its goal of empowering deaf adults in improving their health literacy.

IDEAL Project Kick-off Meeting in Prešov, Slovakia

The first transnational meeting of the IDEAL project (Increasing Health Literacy of Deaf Adults through Innovative Methodologies) took place on 16-17 May, 2023, in Prešov, Slovakia. The meeting was organized by Innosign, one of the partner organizations involved in the project.

Representatives from all partner organizations gathered at the 2-day event to jointly launch this exciting new project. The goal of IDEAL is to increase the health literacy of deaf adults across Europe through the development of innovative educational materials and methodologies.

The program of the kick-off meeting included presentations of each partner organization, an overview of the project’s purpose, objectives, activities, expected impacts, and outcomes. The individual work packages were also discussed in detail.

Work Package 1 focuses on project management, Package 2 on creating a handbook for adult educators, Package 3 on developing educational activities to increase health literacy of the deaf, Package 4 on building an online platform, and Package 5 on awareness-raising and dissemination of results.

In addition to planning and coordinating the work packages, the meeting also addressed practical issues such as budget, timeline, reporting, and administrative tasks. Participants left the meeting with a clear understanding of the project and motivation to fulfill its objectives over the next 2 years.

We have a new logo for the IDEAL project. The logo shows the mission and goals of our project.

The logo has two parts:

• A heart which represents health, care and attention for the deaf community.
• A stethoscope which represents medical exams and care.

Together these symbols show the purpose of the IDEAL project. We want to increase awareness about health for deaf people. We also want to improve access to important health information using educational materials in sign language.

The logo uses bright, mixed pink-purple colors. This shows our effort to communicate clearly about health topics. The logo captures what the IDEAL project is about. We hope it will inspire others working on health literacy too.

We have created a sign name for our new IDEAL project. The IDEAL project aims to increase health literacy for deaf adults.

The IDEAL sign name has two parts:

• First the sign for “stethoscope”
• Then the sign for “sign language”

The stethoscope sign represents health. This is the focus of our project. The sign language sign refers to our target group – deaf adults.

By combining these two signs, we created a unique IDEAL sign name. This sign shows the meaning of our project – to increase health literacy for the deaf in accessible ways.

Thanks to its IDEAL sign, it will help the deaf community remember what our project is about. We will use the IDEAL sign in videos and materials for the deaf.

We hope the IDEAL sign will further spread the ideas and goals of the project to deaf adults.

We have started a new European project called IDEAL. IDEAL stands for “Increasing DEaf Adult health Literacy through innovative methodologies”. This means “Increasing health literacy of deaf adults through new ways”.

The goal of the IDEAL project is to increase awareness of deaf adults about their health. We want to help deaf adults understand health information better.

We will create educational materials in sign languages to make it easier for deaf people to access important health information. As part of the project, we have already created a website in six written languages – English, Slovak, Czech, Hungarian, Spanish and Italian. The site has videos in six sign languages – International sign, Slovak sign language, Czech sign language, Hungarian sign language, Spanish sign language and Italian sign language. This will help spread important health information to many deaf adults across Europe.
